Colorado Alternative Licensing Program

Cesar Chavez Academy is the only educational center in Southeastern Colorado that is licensed by the Colorado Department of Education as an Alternative Teacher Licensing site. The intensive one-year program offered through Cesar Chavez Academy is designed for those individuals who desire to enter the teaching profession via an alternative or non-traditional route.

 INITIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Bachelors Degree in any area from an accredited university

  • Acceptable work background

  • Ability to pass Colorado Department of Education background check

  • Ability to communicate effectively

  • Strong desire to work with children

 PROGRAM COMPONENTS

  • Education Seminar (3.0 Credits)

  • 90 Hours of Shadowing, Observation, and Teaching (if not currently teaching)

  • Mentoring by Program Staff

  • Full-Time Teaching Position (one year)

  • Periodic Mentor/Teacher Meetings

  • Self Assessment and Evaluation

 BENEFITS

The cost is less than a traditional college teacher education program. On average, a 2 1/2 year teacher education program would cost 7 to 10 thousand dollars and several hours of college class time and student teaching. The intensive one-year program allows candidates to enter the teaching profession immediately and complete certification in less time than a traditional program. Successful candidates who complete our program are fully licensed teachers in the State of Colorado. Candidates begin to work with students immediately and gain valuable classroom experience.

TUITION AND FEES

* The total cost of the program is $5000.00 and includes the following:

  • One semester Seminar with 3.0 graduate credit hours (Adams State College)

  • Seminar Materials

  • Mentoring by Alternative Teaching Program Staff

* This amount does not include fees charged by Colorado Department of Education. Textbooks assigned are the responsibility of the student.

 FINANCIAL AID

Loan programs are available. The payment plans for the loan extends to two years.

 TIMELINE

 Cohorts will begin in January and September of each year.

 COMMON QUESTIONS

If I am already employed at a public, private, or charter school in Colorado and wish to receive an alternative teaching license what do I need to do?

Formally apply to the Alternative Teaching Program.

  1. Be officially accepted into the program.

  2. Attend and successfully complete a graduate seminar course two evenings a month.

  3. Be currently employed as a full-time paid teacher

  4. Pay all required fees.

  5. Receive written approval from your administrator / board of directors to participate in the program.

What happens after I apply for the program?

Candidates who have completed their application and have met the initial criteria will be interviewed by our mentor panel. The panel consists of administrators, teachers, and members of the Cesar Chavez Advisor Council. Top candidates will be accepted into our program and begin in January or September.

After completing the program am I a licensed teacher?

Yes! After successfully completing the program, the Alternative Program staff will complete the necessary paperwork and recommend the candidate receive a Colorado Provisional Teaching License. New federal law requires all teachers in public schools to be certified by 2005.
